Job opening: Environmental Agent

The Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO) is an international association for Arctic expedition cruise operators and associated industries. AECO main objectives are to ensure environmentally friendly, safe and considerate tourism in the Arctic, and to advocate for the interests of our members. Our almost 70 international members operate more than 50 cruise vessels and yachts in the Arctic. AECO’s Secretariat has five employees, and offices in Tromsø and Copenhagen. AECO and AECO’s members are involved in projects created to safeguard the Arctic environment. This includes a Clean Seas Project that aims at reducing single used plastics in the cruise industry, involve cruise passengers in beach cleanups, developing educational material and share best practices. To help us manage and carry out tasks related our Clean Seas project and other environmental efforts, AECO is looking to hire an:

Environmental Agent

  • Full time, 1-year engagement with possible extension
  • Preferably based in Tromsø. Home office in other places in Europe can be considered.
  • Tentative start date: September 2019

The position includes project management of AECO’s Clean Seas project, and a range of tasks connected to AECO’s efforts to safeguard the environment. The Clean Seas project includes ship visits and member contact to support efforts aiming at reducing use of single used plastics, monitoring and documenting beach cleanings, developing educational materiel and sharing of best practices. Project management also involves coordinating project groups, outreach and presentations, identifying and working with partners, and other tasks. The environmental agent will also have other tasks related to AECO’s environmental portfolio and play a key role in spreading information about AECO’s environmental efforts and in raising awareness of the issue among the association’s members, partners and the public.

Applicants should have a relevant higher education, and knowledge and experience from working with environmental issues. The ideal candidate is highly motivated, preferably with experience from the polar expedition cruise industry. The position requires excellent oral and written communication skills (fluent/native English), and preferably a mastery of one of the Scandinavian languages. Applicants should have good computer software/applications skills.

The position includes a variety of tasks, friendly colleagues and an international work environment. The position involves travel and Arctic field visits.
