Today, in a meeting in the Council Chamber at the Royal Palace the Norwegian King and the Council of State have appointed a new official committee that will provide advice and recommendations on maritime safety and preparedness challenges related to cruise traffic in Norway, including Svalbard.
We are proud and honoured to announce that AECO’s executive director, Frigg Jørgensen, has been appointed as one of the committee members. We would also like to congratulate Karin Strand from AECO member Hurtigruten, and the rest of the committee members with their appointments and wish them all good luck with this important work.
The Council has been commissioned to give advice on risk mitigating measures and the cruise industry’s responsibility to apply preventive and preparedness measures. The committee’s work will acknowledge Norway’s responsibilities related to international and regional search and rescue (SAR) cooperation. The committee will consist of ten members representing authorities, industries, and other SAR stakeholders, and will be chaired by Kjerstin Askholt, Governor of Svalbard.
The committee is expected to finalize the work by the end of 2021.
